On-the-Job Training (OJT)
What Is On-the-Job Training?
On-the-Job Training (OJT) is a program offered by the County of San Bernardino’s Workforce Development Department to assist businesses offset the training costs of new employees. Normally when businesses hire new employees there is a period of time when the employee is learning the job and he/she is not as productive as more experienced employees. OJT assists in offsetting these costs and helps your company to hire and train highly qualified employees!
How Does It Work?
The County will reimburse up to 50% of the wages paid, for a period of 3 to 6 months (depending upon the nature of the position), while you train the employee in his/her new job. There is practically no paperwork or record-keeping involved on your part. You determine what the training will be, send us an invoice for the hours worked during this period, and we reimburse you for the agreed amount via direct deposit. Since the employee belongs to you and is under your payroll, workers comp, etc., there is no obligation to retain an employee that is not working out or is unable to perform the assigned work. There is also no obligation to hire anyone that is referred to you for consideration. Employees must be S.B. County residents, and males must be registered with the Selective Service (prior to the age of 26).
What Are the Requirements?
Prior to the first day of work the employer agrees to an arrangement with the County of San Bernardino to train the newly hired employee and the amount of reimbursement.
The employer must show proof of workers compensation and tax identification number.
The starting wage must be minimum wage or greater.
The job must be at least 32 hours per week and be considered permanent. Hours worked over 40 hours in a week are reimbursable, but only at the agreed-upon reimbursement rate.
A record of the hours worked must be submitted monthly to receive reimbursement.
How Does Your Company Benefit?
Example of “OJT Reimbursement” dollars to your company:
You pay the employee $10.00/hr.
The County reimburses you $5.00/hr., for up to 6 months (1,040 hours), depending upon the nature of the position
Reimbursement Total: $5,200
Now, multiply that by 2, 3, or more employees!
